Description
Gender and chivalric roles are reversed: women joust, fight with distaffs, or receive a man's surrender. Harley MS 6563 ff.59v and 63v–64r; Queen Mary Psalter f.197v; Luttrell Psalter f.60.
Evidence of adoption or transmission
Women fighting, jousting or wielding distaffs recur in several illuminated books.
What remains uncertain
The witnesses do not establish common women or other working people adopting the motif. Its social message cannot be inferred solely from gender reversal.
