About the work
Imported from the workbook's Full reassessment sheet, revised 7 October 2026 (record ID 52). The assessment below is the workbook's comparative judgment under its stated criteria; source links and limits are retained.
Workbook assessment: Insufficient evidence
Date or witness: Second quarter of 14th century, c.1325–1350
Region: Paris, France
Workbook date-sort bounds: 1325 CE to 1350 CE; these bounds are not automatically invention or disappearance dates.
Description
A nun gathers phalluses from a tree into a basket in Roman de la Rose, BnF Français 25526 f.106v; the same margin contains a monk/nun kiss.
Evidence of adoption or transmission
The famous penis-harvesting scene is a secure Parisian manuscript image of c.1325–1350.
What remains uncertain
No independently adopted series of this exact nun-and-tree image is established by the sources. Association with the broader sexual-badge repertoire is insufficient to make this one picture a grassroots meme.
