About the work
Imported from the workbook's Full reassessment sheet, revised 7 October 2026 (record ID 86). The assessment below is the workbook's comparative judgment under its stated criteria; source links and limits are retained.
Workbook assessment: Plausible
Date or witness: Referenced by early 8th century; well attested in 9th–10th-century Arabic literature
Region: Arabic-speaking world, subsequently Persian and Turkish traditions
Workbook date-sort bounds: 700 CE to 999 CE; these bounds are not automatically invention or disappearance dates.
Description
A portable comic protagonist who can be fool, clever observer or trickster; anecdotes were repeatedly reassigned and retold across languages.
Evidence of adoption or transmission
Juha is a portable folk protagonist: oral and literary communities repeatedly assign different jokes to him, and the tradition crosses Arabic, Berber, Sephardic, Sicilian, Maltese and Persian settings.
What remains uncertain
This fits the mechanism far better than a single joke book. Nevertheless, early witnesses are literary and much detailed oral documentation is later. Do not equate a ninth-century written mention with proof of the whole later grassroots network.
Candidate-index family 20: Juha / Joha the wise fool
The workbook groups records 86 here and rates the family Plausible. This is a research shortlist, not proof of an independently established meme family.
