Kilroy Was Here

A black line drawing shows a long-nosed figure peeking over a wall above the words “Kilroy was here.”

About the work

American soldiers adopted “Kilroy Was Here” during World War II. The National Park Service reports that it is believed to have originated with shipyard inspector James J. Kilroy.

This is a contributor-made example drawing uploaded in 2005, not a wartime artifact. Its uploader dedicated it to the public domain on Wikimedia Commons.
